STRAIGHT AHEAD (Grades 3-4)

(Grade Level 3-4) This series contains the more mainstream kinds of charts appropriate for the average to advanced high school ensemble or even a younger college ensemble. Brass ranges move above the treble clef to written C-D for the lead trumpet and down to pedal Bb for the bass trombone. Lead trombone parts usually go up to F or so. The musical language is more sophisticated, the parts more technically challenging, but still very playable. There are no written solos, just chord changes, but the changes are quite playable and the tempos quite manageable so that students can be successful as they learn more about improvising. There are no doubles for the saxes.

Rhythm parts contain some written notes but contain mostly slashes and chord symbols. Drum parts have the necessary rhythmic patterns and ensemble figures.

Orange Drink with an ATTITUDE! This funky chart starts with a piano riff to set up the rhythm groove before the trumpet and altos hit with the melody. Trombones and low saxes support with counterpoint. After the trombones take us through the bridge the saxes again state the melody in a dramatic stop time section that moves into the trumpet and trombone solos. After a drum solo the bari and bass trombone shine as they set the funky foundation for the shout chorus. A return of the piano riff sets up the final melodic statement and dramatic coda. Trumpet range to written High C. Trombone to G.

Phat and Sassy

Grade 3      Swing      Composer:Paul Baker      Price:$45

excerpt
full version

A great chart for teaching all the fundamentals of big band swing that draws on the traditions of the music and presents them in a fresh new way. Opening with the famous Gene Krupa floor tom riff sets the style as the ensemble builds to the sax section melody. The brass section takes over trading the melody back and forth before setting up the tenor sax solo. A trumpet solo follows close behind, supported by sax backgrounds. Next, in the tradition of Benny Goodman’s “Sing Sing Sing” the band breaks down to a unison trombone motif that builds throughout the ensemble to launch the sax soli. The brass section takes over once again as we’re “Flyin’ Home” to the big finish. Trumpet range is to written high C.

Another funky New Orleans 2nd Line chart from the pen of Robert “Beto” Skiles. The rhythm section sets the funky groove followed by the trombone section. Saxes jump in on the melody with the brass section responding to their calls. A fun contrapuntal section follows where lines are passed from section to section.
